What is the effect of coffee on children? After all, who didn't have "milked-down" coffee when they were children? I know I did, but to clear the air a bit with regards to coffee, here are a couple of facts.
The consumption of coffee(with caffeine being the indirect consumption) does interfere with children's sleeping habits. Insomnia and decreased appetite are the two major concerns because of the stimulation coffee provides. This stimulation creates hyperactivity, restlessness and the inability to concentrate. Coffee also acts as a diuretic, which(in turn) increases urine production. This causes the loss of calcium which leads to bone loss. Six mg of calcium is lost per 100 mg of caffeine and this calcium is essential for children's bone growth.
But, as with many other food items, certainly keep abreast of what your child eats and drinks. For the parents should be the alert ones. The reason I bring the effects of coffee up in this recipe? Because I use Yankee Apple Jam, which contains a substantial amount of (very VERY strong(or double-strength) coffee.
